Is WebAssembly ready for the enterprise? Experts weigh in.

Bill Doerrfeld | June 20, 2024

The WebAssembly (Wasm) wave is bound to break... someday. My latest post on LeadDev looks at how large companies are using Wasm, and where the technology is going. In short, Wasm is still waiting for its moment.

My post looks at some significant examples of Wasm in production at Adobe, Google, BMW, Shopify, Zeiss Group, Orange, Bloomberg, and elsewhere, and features a cast of Wasm experts on where the technology is heading.

The views on Wasm are mixed. While its use on the web is proven, other use cases are still maturing. Some view Wasm as the next wave of virtualization, but most enterprises are still evaluating Wasm in an experimental, non-production stage. Some say it doesn't suit their needs at all.

WebAssembly is one of the most exciting yet enigmatic fields in tech these days... with a lot of opinions and hype. That said, it shows promise and seems to be on the cusp of something big. As Matt Butcher says: "We're right at the point where the wave breaks." 🌊
