Alternative clouds: CIOs are still evaluating
My latest
feature for CIO.com offers some advice on what to consider as enterprise executives evaluate alternative clouds.
I set out expecting to write an article about how every enterprise was jumping on trendy alternative or "neo" clouds. That ended up not being the case.
Turns out the enterprise executives I connected with for my latest CIO Online feature are still very much in evaluation mode.
They definitely see the benefits of neoclouds, but seem wary about maturity, security, continuity with existing systems, and SLA guarantees compared with the hyperscalers.
This fits with a recent Foundry survey, which found about one in three respondents, the largest bucket, are currently evaluating vendors.
The roadmap then? Assessing all clouds on a per-workload basis and looping in alternative clouds when it makes sense. Especially for AI experimentation and model development.
As Smartsheet CIO and CISO Ravi Soin says: "We'll grow our use of alternative clouds, but within a clearly defined perimeter."
