Signs point to AI talent redistribution, not replacement
Bill Doerrfeld | June 10, 2026
My latest for LeadDev explores why talent redistribution is the angle missing from AI layoff news.
AI layoffs are everywhere. But the headlines often overshadow the actual economic reasons behind these cuts, as well as the net-positive talent redistribution happening throughout tech at large.
For LeadDev, I looked into the jobs data and interviewed engineering leaders to see what's happening on the ground.
The takeaway: AI is not just reducing work. It's creating more work, new kinds of work, and new AI-native roles. And a number of organizations are making headcount neutral (or positive) shifts right now.
So, I think the bigger story might be about talent redistribution, not outright replacement.
The layoffs are happening, which sucks, but the broader trend gives me hope.
